About

FTF grew out of 18 years of experience implementing InsuranceSuite projects: several products going live together, long test cycles, and data that can't be rolled back.

FTF is the feature toggle framework every mature organisation would benefit from — one that runs:

FTF evolution

From Alex Zak, FTF creator

  1. The idea

One problem most InsuranceSuite customers share

Working on a Guidewire implementation spanning multiple products, projects and jurisdictions, I saw a problem most InsuranceSuite customers share: project code waiting on long-lived branches, and no common way to switch features on and off across applications at run time.

The industry answers this with feature toggles (or flags), which decouple deployments from releases and make the move to trunk-based development possible. Why feature toggles

  2. Toggles in Guidewire applications

    Inside each application

On that implementation, feature toggles ran inside each Guidewire application, each application keeping its own copy of its toggles. It proved the model, but on its own it couldn't coordinate a release across systems.

  3. LaunchDarkly and ConfigCat

    The established players

The two established players in this space provide the functionality, but managing toggles with them takes substantial effort, including local development for both InsuranceSuite and digital channels. Then FTF was born, supporting several modes.

1 · One application

Standalone FTF

One InsuranceSuite or digital application defines its toggles and releases with the FTF client. Toggles are stored, maintained and promoted across environments by the built-in toggles provider, a SaaS application. BAs, developers, QA, DevOps and other roles each have their part.

2 · Multiple applications

Integrated FTF

Several applications go live together, releasing related features at the same time. Each application has its own feature toggles, controlled by a release switch; switching releases on or off across all applications is the job of dedicated people.

3 · Your vendor

BYO toggles provider

An organisation that prefers its existing arrangement with LaunchDarkly or ConfigCat, and its existing integrations, can keep it: FTF works as a proxy between client applications and the external provider, hiding each one's specifics from users. BYO provider

4 · Open standard

Fully OFREP compliant

FTF implements OpenFeature's Remote Evaluation Protocol, so any application in any language OFREP supports can join the same family. Open standards
